The pressures on our society from immigration are real.

The handling of the situation in response has frequently been close to chaotic.

As a country we can and should look after genuine asylum seekers.

Those coming to Ireland for economic and social reasons however are in a different category. They should nevertheless receive rapid and fair assessment.

The EU pact on Migration and Asylum promises to address the current disorder. An 18 month moratorium for International Protection applications would clear the backlog before it comes into effect.
